Skin types have been defined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) along with the American Academy of Dermatology. The classification of each skin type is based upon two key factors: the individual’s skin tone and their sensitivity to UV rays from tanning beds or sunlight.

These six skin types are:

I White skin that easily burns and never tans
II Very sensitive lightly colored skin that rarely tans and burns more often than most
III Light skin that tans more than II, but burns about as often as tanning
IV Light dark skin, tans more than burns
V Darker skin which rarely burns and tans darkly
VI Dark skin that never burns, producing even, dark tans
